As many of you know, I like to be frugal, and when I read on a message board about using a shower board as a dry erase board, my imagination went crazy with ideas. I started by purchasing a 4 x 8 sheet of Shower Board from our local Lumber Yard. It cost $23, though at Lowes it would probably cost a bit less. You want to make sure you request smooth white shower board, and you may want to explain what you are going to use it for.
When we got it home, my husband used a saw of some sort to cut it, but he should have used a skill saw as we learned. I gave him measurements, so we would not waste any of our board. We have two 3x 4 boards for our walls, however, at this time we are only using one. The leftover pieces will be cut into lapboard sized units for different uses.
For us hanging the board was a challenge. I finally figured out a way to do it without cutting any holes in the board. Once you start working with this board, you will find that it is quite brittle when it comes to cutting it. 
I used those little white things with a brad type thing in them. To mount them, you get the back wet, and then stick them on. Well, by themselves, this is not enough, so I then soaked them down with a lot of super glue. Yes, I said a LOT. ;) This worked. For this size of board, I used three. I just put them on nails in our wall.
I didn’t add anything fancy to the edges. I have read of people putting these in frames. Again, this is frugal. ;) One thing I have noticed is that the low odor markers do not erase as clearly as the regular. Notice the green smear under Saturday school?
Having this board has also allowed me to have posters and maps to hang easily and take down easily. I just use binder clips to hold them up. When I need the board, I fold them and put them in our file for later use. 
Notice that there is just a bit of the board showing under our world map? This map is a fabric map that I found at Wal-Mart many year ago. See the yarn on the map? That is the sailing route that an explorer took. I was able to sew it on. My children could probably tell you who it was. However, I went to public school and don’t remember. I do believe it was one of the Erikson.

What a great idea. I went to Lowes to get art boards(I forget the material I used) for the kids. They cut it there and everything.

our dry erase board ( an old one we had for a long time) finally fell of the wall…. In a pinch, we have used the full length mirrors in a bedroom to work out math problems…. just use a dark ( brown or black ) marker. It works great!

We did the same thing! Sometimes it’s hard to erase, but a little rubbing alcohol makes it like new again!
Love this idea! I also have the same fabric map that I was going to quilt but never got around to it. Never thought to use it like that! Great idea! Now I need to dig it out from the fabric box

VERY good idea! I found a wall-sized chalkboard at Goodwill on 1/2 price Saturday for $3 if I hadn’t I would be doing this in a heartbeat. Thanks for the tip. I’ll keep it in mind if I can’t find chalk to use with imy board.
