Many of you wondered how I was finding time to get a little workout in in my recent weight loss post. .
Well, with all we do, it isn’t easy and quite honestly, our bodies become quite used to our basic every day motions, and more or less stuck in a rut. We have to figure out how to continue to get things done around the house, while also burning a few calories. This, with a little creativity can be quite fun.
So, as many of you know, weight was a non issue until I hit 30, then well, it has all been downhill, and now six years later, I am on a mission to make it a non issue again. After our sixth child was born, things changed for me. She was a NICU baby, and was sick and very needy much of her first 2.5 years of life. I sat and held her most of those months. Sitting is not conductive to staying in shape.
So, how do we make our movements count without taking away from our family?
-
Sit on an exercise ball when you can. I sit on one at the computer, while watching a movie, and when working with out children for lessons. Wiggle while on it…that will engage your core muscles (tummy, muscles along the ribs, and back muscles). Keep a pair of hand weights nearby and grab them up and do a few lifts while going over spelling words, math flash cards etc. with your children.
-
Get a Twist Disc and use that in the same way you do the ball, except while on the computer.
Figure Trimmer Magnetic Wave Disc
- When going from room to room, rather walking, jump, jump rope, grapevine, lunge (walking lunges) etc.
- When cooking, do a few lunges between stirring.
- Do squats when stirring.
- Do jump squats when waiting at the stove.
- When switching laundry, squat to move things to the dryer.
- When folding laundry, make more trips to and from each room. Rather than taking 10 articles of clothing to the same room, take 2. It will take a bit longer, but, you just increased your movement by 5 times!!
- When outside playing with your kiddos, run with them. Chase them. Ride bikes with them.
- When playing catch with your kiddos, so some squats, jump squats and lunges while you wait for the ball to come back to you.
- While in the shower, do some hoe downs.
- Just for fun, grab one of your younger kiddos, and carry them around the block and see how fast you can walk with them in your arms. I wouldn’t recommend trying this with a child over 45 lbs.
- When sitting on the exercise ball, try doing some punches as you would a little punching bag. Twist with them, and keep balanced.
- I also do leg lifts while watching a movie.
- When dusting, vacuuming, and doing other such chores, listen to some faster beat music and get your tush moving, swing those hips and such. Do a few squats and lunges. Turn up the volume and really make it count.
- Dance with your kids.
