The really BIG benefit to in person STATE conventions is that these conventions make it possible for our state board of directors to keep an eye on the legal things going on concerning homeschooling and parental rights.
Our attendance is what helps fund the state organizations and therefore, we must try to attend. Conventions are our family vacations.
10. Socialization for you and your children with like minded people.
9. Hands on learning about curriculum
8. Won’t have to pay shipping for curriculum needs
7. Since you won’t be paying for shipping, you now have wiggle room in your budget for extras.
6. Meet new homeschooling friends that become life long encouragers
5. Learn new ways to help your children learn.
4. You will be encouraged that the three Rs aren’t really as important as every one tells you, but that God should and needs to be the center of your homeschool.
3. You will be encouraged and challenged Spiritually (as a Christian)
2. You and husband (if able to both attend) will get to connect a bit even with children along, because of windshield time.
1. Being in a building full of like minded people is just so refreshing. You will come home encouraged, supported and with a whole new group praying for you all year.
Haven’t attended a convention yet? Wanting to attend another convention? I am headed to and speaking at the Teaching Parents Association Convention June 1-2 in Wichita KS. I have attended this convention every year since 2003. Todd Wilson and Diane Craft will be the main speakers along with several more who are on their homeschool journeys. Many of my closest homeschool friends meet here every year for our “homeschool revival”.
Another fun reason to attend conventions…getting to meet those who write your favorite curriculums!! Also even a little more special? Getting your picture taken with some of the big names!!
Israel Wayne of Wisdom’s Gate and I at the Midwest Parent Educators Convention in Kansas City this year.
Stephen Kendrick from Sherwood Baptist church, and Sherwood Pictures, he is one of the producers of Fireproof, Courageous and so forth. Taken at Teach Them Diligently
Melanie Young author of Raising Real Men. Taken at Teach Them Diligently
Lora and Susan Marlow author of the Circle C Adventures Series, taken at Midwest Parent Educators Convention in Kansas City.
So, as you can see, attending a homeschool convention is well worth the expense and time. You will not regret it. And for a professional opinion on Christian State Run Homeschool Conventions, check out this article at HSLDA.

Excellent points, Betty. I know that the trend seems to be towards for-profit mega-conventions, but the state organizations are the ones I’m aware of who have been watchdogs in guarding our homeschool freedoms. We both attend and volunteer at our annual state convention. Long may it live and grow!
Our state also has an annual convention for secular homeschooling. I haven’t been, but I can only imagine that it would be as energizing and encouraging for inclusive homeschoolers as the Christian convention is for us, with new ideas, suggestions for solutions to problems, meeting people who are doing the same thing you are doing and for the same reasons, etc.
(In our state the Christian and secular state organizations work together to protect all home educators’ freedoms in our state. They may not agree on everything, but they do agree on parents’ right to be in charge of their children’s education.)

Keep up the good work Betty! Please know that you’re efforts are appreciated. Without having read previous remarks, I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion, as long as it remains mature and in line with the topic. Homeschooling is a personal decision. There are many benefits to homeschool. We all know, there’s nothing better than homemade or homegrown. I’ve never been to a homeschooling convention, but it sounds like a fun way to unite with other homeschoolers, authors, publishers as well as learn about NEW Curriculums, laws, share experiences and ideas with others just like YOU and I. Who cares what other’s may say or think. When I’m amongst those attempts to be discouraged, I always think, “When we’re walking on the right… there’s no better place to be!” God bless!
I am removing all comments, as they no longer pertain to the original post. I feel that at the rate things are going with these comments, that the thread was getting too divisive and polarized.
As homeschoolers, we need to build a united front. From here on, if I don’t feel comfortable with a comment, I will remove it.
This blog’s intention is to build, support and encourage women, and I can’t do that if I am constantly trying to moderate comments which appear to be looking for a fight.
