We are Growing, Keeping in Touch

As my blog grows, I am adding new ways to keep in touch. Some of you probably follow through email, Facebook and so forth. I am now adding a newsletter that I plan to be sending out about once a week or every two weeks. I will share a few links to blog posts, special links to things I find around the web, sales and freebies related to homeschool, Christian wives, parenting, farm and all sorts of goodies, tips and hints I learn and funnies around the farm.

Bless a Homeschooler $500 Giveaway

As homeschool moms many of us come from single income families. We pinch and squeeze and tighten the budgets like no body’s business. As a single income homeschool family, I know that just about any of us could use an extra $500 to use on homeschool supplies, field trips or even a coop class you didn’t’ figure you would be able to swing.

Bless a Homeschooler Giveaway 600x600

At this time, if I won this giveaway, I would buy a fabric cube for each of my children, one for my planning tools, one for completed work, and one for family school.

Any homeschool family could use this wonderful pencil sharpener. We actually already own this baby, and LOVE it!!

You could subscribe to a year’s subscription to LessonTrek and be able to plan and record your entire homeschool year in a professional format.

You can add another wonderful history resource to your homeschool, helping you teach history for a strong Christ centered literature based

perspective.

These are just a few of the things I would get for our homeschool to make this year. I would use some of the leftover money for field trips, special rewards for extra hard work on challenging concepts, books my children want, and craft or hobby supplies. What would you purchase with an extra $500 to spend on homeschool supplies?

Field Trip Friday~The Only Underground Salt Museum in the U.S.A.

If you read last week’s field trip post, you know that my grandparents have been visiting. We had already taken a few four generation field trip in Kansas. However, we went on one final trip this past Sunday, to the one and only USA Underground Salt Museum. This field trip was awesome. We learned about types of salt, what colors it, how to shine it up, and different tools to mine it.

Underground Salt Museum Field Trip

Underground Salt Museum Field Trip

I think one of the cutest things, is toddlers in those little hard hats. ;)

My children really enjoyed seeing the old equipment used to mine the salt, and seeing a bit of red salt.

There was some evolution in several of the posters and one of the guides talked about it a bit, but my children got the, “they are so lost” looks on their faces and we went on.

If you are in the Kansas area, I highly recommend this field trip, but know it is a bit pricey.

I am at Gricefully Homeschooling today and Why I am laying low…

Come learn about how I provide a thriving home education while pushing through a financial crisis over at Gricefully Homeschooling.

Also, I have had huge internet connection issues in the last week.  We are working on making a decision about our needs, that will both be what we need and not cost a fortune. Thanks for your patience through this. If you have rural internet and have a suggestion, please leave it in the comments.  Thanks

No 31 Thursdays Link up today

I am sorry, but it is one of those, thing where mom is tending to more than her blog.

This week I am tackling a huge project for A Journey Through Learning and working VBS for our church. Having fun in both places, but 31 Thursdays took a hit. See you next week!!

Worlds Greatest Stories

My Children LOVE audios, and I love to have them on hand.

When I received The World’s Greatest Stories in the mail I was super excited, and rightfully so.

We received the NIV version of Volume 1 The Prophets. There are samples to listen to on that page.

Volume 1 - The Prophets

  • The Blazing Furnace
  • The Handwriting on the Wall
  • Daniel in the Lion’s Den
  • Elijah & the Prophets of Baal
  • The Prophecy of Jonah

I love having educational and virtuous products on hand for my children. I would use this in the van when I needed my children to settle down for awhile. I also used it at naptime to keep those non nappers busy.

George W. Sarris, does a wonderful job of telling the stories so they literally jump of the page. They come to life and really help the children understand the story.

“George W. Sarris’ one-person dramatizations of the Bible are so real that it makes you feel as though you are there. He brings the Word of God to life with an unusual talent that is truly a gift from God. I have never seen such a unique presentation, and I strongly recommend it.” - William R. Bright, President, Campus Crusade for Christ International

My children really enjoyed the Bible story, and I plan to use it more as my little ones get older.

Don’t forget to check out what the other crew members have to say about The World’s Greatest Stories!

This CD was given to me in return for my honest review.

Education Outside the Home when Homeschooling—AKA Field Trips

Our family enjoys a lot of activities outside our home. We go on both group organized activities, and family activities. Most all include all members of our family—daddy is sometimes unable to go, and I sometimes leave a chatty toddler with him. ;)

We enjoy lots of history and science related activities. Some of these include:

Zoos- There are two small zoos that are free to go to within an hour’s drive from our home. We frequent these two to four times a year. We also try to go to the BIG zoo that does cost a bit once every three to four years.

Santa Fe Trail Center-The Santa Fe Trail center is just forty-five miles from us. We have attended special activities there, plus a few organized group field trips. We go there about twice a year.

Ft. Larned- Again Ft. Larned is about forty-five minutes from us. They have some special activities throughout the year, and we try to go to one of them each year.

Quivera National Wildlife Refuge-We are just seven minute drive from the refuge. If we could go like a crow flies, we could be there in less then five minutes. We attend several of their yearly activities—one coming up on Saturday, and go there several times through the spring, summer and fall months. We love to see the wildlife active and in their natural surroundings.

Apple Orchard-We have visited an apple orchard twice. This was a ton of fun and very educational. We came home this last time and made twenty four quarts of apple sauce.

Pumpkin Patch-We happen to be friends with a family who runs a family pumpkin patch, complete with activities. They have made a program great for school aged children to educate them about life on the farm. We are headed to our annual trip the end of this month.

State Fair—From science to history, to home ec and lots of fun. The State Fair has it all.

Tired Iron Show-This is held at the Santa Fe Trail Center, and includes tons of activities, you would have seen on the pioneer farm up to now. We enjoy the horses plowing, antique tractor pull, and black smith. This year our son spent a ton of time at the black smith.

We visit many of the area’s historical museums. We enjoy learning about the bits and pieces of our area from the past.

Sternberg Museum-We took a two hour trip to the Sternberg Museum last spring. Though it is full of evolution, our children enjoyed learning why people seem to fall for the lies of evolution. They had fun finding the truths of creation too.

Cheyenne Bottoms Education Center-We enjoy going there to learn about many of the animals in our area’s marshes, and wetlands. From the birds to the insects to the creepies and crawlies.

Soldier Homecoming-Teaching patriotism has been important in our family.

A few trips we are planning on are:

Fort Hays

Brick factory

Botanical Garden

Cowtown

Little House Museum

Here are some pictures from some of our field trips. Can you guess where we are in these pictures?

TOS Blog Cruise is exploring field trips this week. See what other families do in their areas, by clicking the button below.

Come Check Out My Guest Post at Raising Arrows Today.

Amy asked me to guest post a couple of month ago, while she is on vacation. I put together a post about some of my favorite homeschool gadgets. Go Check it out, and tell her hi. She has a wonderful blog about her life, from homeschooling, large families, and her grief over the death of her precious baby Emily. I encourage you to spend some time at Raising Arrows and follow her blog too.

Nature Study Tuesday June 21

This week we have seen lots of butterflies, and caterpillars. They such beautiful and interesting creatures. Our family really enjoys observing them.

In this last picture they are doing what is called puddling—getting minerals from the damp earth.

I told you we saw a lot of butterflies. We also say deer tracks in our driveway.

Our tomatoes are setting on.

The wasp or yellow jackets or whatever they are in our birdhouse—nope not getting close enough to tell which. ;) We can watch them from inside our home, because the back of the birdhouse is plexi-glass.

Isaiah picked me some stink weed. Very pretty flower, but will make your eyes water.

Wheat harvest is under way. There are a couple of boys and my hubby in the combine. Father in law is in the truck.

Philip found some sort of large black beetle.

Lots of fun out and about on the prairie. What have you seen in your neck of the woods? Grab the button, write a post, and link it below.
