If you have been homeschooling long, you have probably heard of Five in a Row. However, did you know that Five in a Row offers a product for your children ages two thru four?
Before Five in a Row ($35.00) by Jane Lambert, is a set of plans or tips if you will of twenty-three mini units to compliment twenty-three well known and worthwhile children’s books. Each unit has numerous age appropriate activities for children and parents to do together. Your children will do activities ranging from science related to pre-hand writing and social studies and Bible too.
Here is a bit from the B4FIAR webpage.
This important product includes 23 Five in a Row-style mini-units (plus an extra mini-unit) based on outstanding children’s books for ages 2-4 as well as a large section of learning readiness activities for your every day life: things to do in the kitchen, at the store, at bedtime, bath time, etc.
You’ll find an entire treasury of ideas to prepare children
for pre-learning necessary for their educational foundation. These ideas are wonderfully effective without robbing
your little ones of those special golden years of childhood. Those few brief years of early childhood can never be reclaimed later and many parents discover too late
that they pushed too hard and too early for advanced academic achievement.
These activities are meant to help prepare you children for broader learning experiences that will take place in a year or two.
A few of the activities you will find suggested are:
- Little dramas relating to the story. A Great way to use your dress up clothes.
- Can you find searches…from finding items in your yard or around the house or from the illustrations in the story being read.
- Paper Dolls
- Sequencing
- Activities with art tools, such as crayons, pastels, chalk and more.
- Counting activities.
- Cooking and baking activities
- Floating Activities
- And so much more
The back of the book contains a very nice list of learning readiness activities by subject. I found this to be very thorough. Activities are broken into the following categories:
- Reading Readiness
- Coordination
- Large Motor Skills
- Small Motor Skills
- Bath Time
- In the Kitchen
- At the Store
- Toys
- The Arts
- Learning to see Through Children’s Eyes
- Books to Help You Understand
- In the End
There are no sample pages for B4FIAR, however, I encourage you to read this. To purchase Before Five in a Row, click here and if you look below the image of the book when you click on the Before Five in a Row book, you can find one sample page and a look at the table of contents, though the direct links won’t work for me.
This is a wonderful book to guide you as you do what you probably do everyday, reading to your little ones. You will gain ideas of activities and way to help develop needed skills in your children as you read and learn together.
My little ones favorite book from the books in B4FIAR is Corduroy. They have loved this book for a long time. Their grandpa introduces it to them all and we have worn out several copies.
As part of the TOS crew, I received this book free for my review. I will receive no further compensation.

I have the fondest memories of this book. Katy No Pocket is one of our favorites, but so are all the rest! Great review. I think this is a must have for all preschoolers.
