I have talked about our lifestyle of education a lot on this blog. Even though I am changing up some curriculum and adding more workbooks, we will still be doing a lot of lifestyle education. Many will be heading out on vacation sometime this summer. Take your vacation to another level and enjoy education on vacation.
I have said it before, I will say it again… Children retain the information learned better when learned in a real life manner. Taking a few field trips on vacation and give your children a rich education in some areas.
Ways to Educate before you leave:
- Study the area you are headed for history and geography points of interest.
This series will help your children learn to visualize the area.
Or use these pages…
- Find a historical person to study… have your children write about this person using Notebooking Pages to record what they learn.
- Have them help put together a packing list.
- Have them help the car over for maintenance needs.
- Have them help plan meals and where to eat.
- Teach them about reserving hotel rooms and the benefits of doing it online or over the phone. How to compare prices vs services and so forth.
Ways to educate while driving:
- Audio Books… There are awesome audio books available all over. Character Concepts has many from Uncle Rick one of which is available at The Build Your Bundle Sale has some available in the Boy Bundle from Frank Webster Adventure Audiobook Collection.
- Give your children a laminated map to follow the route with a dry or wet erase marker. We use we erase, as they don’t erase accidentally as easily.
- Have them keep notes about the places they see.
- Take some books along that they can read that are about the area you will be visiting.
- For younger children, taking coloring pages that you can often find online for free.
Ways to record the what they learned:
- Use Notebooking Pages to have your children record their thoughts from a field trip.
- Take a some pictures of your activities, and make a scrapbook when you get home.
- After the trip, you can do further enrichment studies about people you discovered, places, and more!

Education on vacation does not have to be hard or time consuming. You simple plan just a little before you go and then enjoy your time, and point out a few educational opportunities.
